Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in an Ultrahigh-Q Microcavity
We experimentally demonstrate spontaneous symmetry breaking in a whispering-gallery microcavity. Above a threshold power, the intensities of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves in a cavity grow unbalanced, which is induced by the Kerr-nonlinearity-modulated coupling between the counter-propagating waves.
